Helpful Note

Lawnmower batteries have a tough time during winter. Unlike motorcycles or cars that may still get occasional use, most lawnmowers sit completely idle for months at a time — and this is when batteries are most at risk.

Our gel batteries are robust and low maintenance by design, but even the best battery will deteriorate if left unused and uncharged over a long winter. A deeply discharged  battery may not fully recover, meaning poor performance or even failure when you need it most in spring.

The good news is that a little care goes a long way. We recommend the following:

  • At the end of the mowing season, remove the battery from your lawnmower
  • Fully charge it before putting it into storage
  • Store it in a dry, frost-free location, ideally off the ground
  • Top up the charge every 8-10 weeks

If you prefer to leave the battery connected to the mower over winter, be aware that small electrical drains can slowly discharge it. Check the voltage periodically with a multimeter to make sure it stays in good health.

Most battery failures at the start of the mowing season aren’t down to a fault with the battery — they’re simply the result of sitting uncharged over winter. A small amount of maintenance now can significantly extend the life of your gel battery and save you the cost of an early replacement.

Axcell Lawnmower Battery – Frequently Asked Questions

Lawnmowers are often unused during the winter months. This can cause the battery to fully dicharge, and once that happens, it may never return to full health-resulting in poor performance or failure in spring.

At the end of the season, remove the battery from the mower, fully charge it, and store it in a dry, frost free location.

You can, but it's not recommended unless you regularly check the voltage. Small electrical drains can slowly discharge the battery without you realising.

Recharge the battery every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain its condition. Avoid leaving it on charge for more than 24 hours at a time.

A good healthy lawnmower battery should register between 12.6 to 12.7 volts. Due to way batteries discharge it's very important that you test the battery after it has been sitting (not running) for at least an hour, in order to get the resting voltage of the battery. Testing the battery just after use will give an inaccurate reading. See below, a basic battery charge status voltage readings:

Terminal Voltage:  12.6 - 12.7 V  -  Fully Charged

Terminal Voltage:  12.4 V            -  Half Charged

Terminal Voltage:  12.2 V            -  Flat Battery - Requires immediate charge

Terminal Voltage:  12.0 V and below regarded a deep discharge and may have permanent damage.

Yes-using your mower frequently (even a few times a month) will help keep the battery in good condition, however, we would always recommend checking the charge voltage in the battery. This is the best way to know the batteries state of charge and if the voltage is low then charge as necessary.

Batteries naturally lose charge over time. Without maintenance charging, they can drop to a level where permanent damage occurs-even if they appeared fine beforehand.
